Project examples

To complete their Green Belt or Black Belt certification in Lean Six Sigma, students complete a 14-week practical project (part time) with a real organization. Students have typically completed a diploma or degree program already, and in many cases will have professional experience already. Their work will be overseen through regular coaching by a Master Black Belt.

You provide the student with an issue or gap for them to focus on, which could be in manufacturing, quality assurance, supply chain management, customer service, or other areas. For example:

  • Orders are received late by customers 15% of the time. How can we improve timeliness and efficiency in processing orders to ensure they are received on time 100% of the time?
  • Due to variability in the manufacturing process, 20% of products don't meet QA standards and must be discarded. How can we improve standardization to ensure 100% of products meet QA standards?
  • Errors are frequently experienced in financial transaction processing, requiring customers to escalate to your support line. How can we improve the transaction handling to allow customers to complete the process without errors or additional support?
  • It requires too much time for warehouse employees to identify and retrieve products in inventory. How can we improve inventory management to allow an employee to efficiently locate and retrieve any item in the warehouse?

The student will spend time reviewing and analyzing your existing processes and systems, in order to develop effective strategies to reduce variability, improve quality, and improve results for your organization.

Depending on your capacity, the student may oversee the implementation of these new strategies or processes, or can provide you with a report of their recommendations to be implemented in your own time.

If you are considering implementing Lean Six Sigma processes, this can be a great way to test their applicability to your business, in addition to gaining practical recommendations.
